The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has elected Bala Mohammed as its new national chairman.
Mohammed, who previously served as the party’s national organising secretary, emerged as chairman following the resignation of Ajuji Ahmed.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, Ahmed—who had been acting national chairman since March 2024—recently defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Johnson described Mohammed as “an astute administrator” from Kaduna, adding that he brings experience, strategic thinking, and strong commitment to the party’s grassroots ideology.
He also raised concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that it is under pressure. According to him, rising hardship, insecurity, and inflation have placed the country in a difficult situation.
Johnson further alleged that the NNPP has faced a series of sponsored internal crises aimed at creating fear among opposition members.
Despite these challenges, he expressed confidence in the party’s future, noting that the new leadership would guide its affairs effectively.
“We are witnessing a coordinated assault on the foundations of our democracy,” Johnson said.
“Our democracy is under attack, but the NNPP remains a sanctuary for the hopes of the common man.”
