Nigerian social media commentator found dead
A 54-year-old social media commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, has been killed at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.
Dan Shagamu was reportedly attacked by unidentified men who broke into his residence and slaughtered him in the early hours of Wednesday.
His family members said they were alerted to the incident around 12:30 a.m., after a relative received a phone call informing him that Dan Shagamu had been attacked.
According to the family, the relative rushed to the residence and met policemen at the scene.
The victim was taken to a hospital, where medical personnel conducted investigations before his remains were released to the family around 2:30 a.m.
The family said it was not aware of the circumstances surrounding the killing and was not suspecting any particular person.
However, relatives disclosed that two people had been arrested from the area in connection with the incident.
The deceased, who was married with six children, was known for his social media videos and commentary on political, religious and community matters.
Dan Shagamu operated under the name Dan Shagamu International and had built a following through videos in which he discussed developments in Kano and the country.
He had also been critical of the administration of President Bola Tinubu in some of his social media posts and shared content supporting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He also regularly discussed religious issues and had criticised some Islamic clerics in Kano in his online videos.
The killing came after Dan Shagamu had previously raised concerns about threats to his life.
In a recent video posted on social media, the commentator appealed to the Kano State Government, the emirate authorities and the police to intervene, alleging that he had been receiving threats from people living around his residence.
He also alleged that some children in the neighbourhood had repeatedly pelted his house with stones, damaged his television and gathered outside his residence to insult and threaten him.
Dan Shagamu said he had reported the matter to the Gaida village head, who subsequently referred it to the Ja’en village head, but claimed the situation had not been resolved.
In another video, he showed children gathered outside his home and alleged that they were threatening him.
He had maintained that people in the neighbourhood were aware of the alleged threats and accused some residents of working together against him.
