Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has strongly criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission following a raid on his properties in Abuja on Monday, March 23, 2026.

The incident occurred shortly after a solidarity visit by former presidential candidate Peter Obi, drawing increased public attention to the unfolding situation.

Malami disclosed that EFCC operatives marked several of his properties, indicating they are under investigation. He described the action as an attempt to publicly embarrass him and suggested it may be politically motivated.

“Where’s the court order you have to mark my property? Are you trying to embarrass me or what?” he asked, adding that his detention and ongoing legal challenges appear to carry a political undertone.

However, a source within the EFCC confirmed that the commission secured a valid court order authorising the investigation. According to the source, marking properties is a standard procedure used to notify the public and prevent interference.

Among the properties under investigation in the Federal Capital Territory are a duplex on Amazon Street in Maitama, Meethaq Hotel branches in Jabi and Maitama, 42 bungalows in Efab Estate, and Harmonia Hotels located in Area 11, Garki.

Other assets listed include Rayhaan University sites, Rayhaan Model Academy, Rayhaan Primary and Secondary School, Rayhaan Agro Allied Factory, factory buildings and machinery, a factory mosque, Rayhaan Mill staff quarters, Rayhaan Bustan building, a printing press, Al-Afiya Energy Tanker Garage, Amasdul Oil and Gas Ltd structures, and Rayhaan Radio.

In Kano State, properties linked to Malami include Zeennoor Hotel, Zeennoor Mosque, the old Zeennoor hotel building, Rayhaan Hotel Kano, and Rayhaan Gym Kano.

Malami, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress, expressed frustration while addressing journalists, insisting that the EFCC’s actions are politically driven and aimed at damaging his reputation.

The development comes amid ongoing investigations into serious allegations against him, including terrorism financing and fraud.

The recent visit by Peter Obi following Malami’s release on bail has further intensified public interest, although details of the meeting have not been made public.

What you should know

The EFCC’s investigation into Abubakar Malami signals a high-profile anti-corruption probe involving a former top government official.

While the commission maintains it followed due process with a court order, Malami insists the actions are politically motivated. The case highlights ongoing tensions between political figures and anti-graft agencies in Nigeria, especially when investigations involve influential individuals.

As the probe continues, the outcome could have significant political and legal implications.
