In a year defined by fierce competition and a crowded theatrical calendar, the romantic drama “Love and New Notes” has officially shattered expectations, emerging as the highest-grossing film of 2026 in the region.

The feature, which blends a poignant love story with the harsh realities of Nigeria’s 1984 currency reform, has amassed a staggering N328 million within just weeks of its debut.

The film’s ascent began with a seismic opening weekend. Distributed by industry giant FilmOne Entertainment, the project pulled in N106.5 million during its first three days, anchored by a rare and coveted opening-day gross exceeding N100 million.

Industry analysts suggest that this performance isn’t just a win for the cast but a validation of the “mid-to-high budget” production model. As production costs rise, “Love and New Notes” proves that local audiences are willing to show up in droves for high-quality, culturally resonant storytelling.

Directed by the prolific Kayode Kasum, the film’s success is being attributed to its unique thematic duality. While the chemistry between leads Timini Egbuson and Sophie Alakija provides the emotional heartbeat, the backdrop of the 1984 economic shift offers a layer of grit and social commentary that has captivated older and younger demographics alike.

“The film doesn’t just offer escapism,” noted one cinema manager in Accra. “It mirrors a period of Nigerian history that feels eerily relevant today, making the ‘survival’ aspect of the romance feel incredibly high-stakes.”

The sustained attendance across both Nigeria and Ghana highlights a broader shift in the “Nollywood 2.0” era:
Star Power: Egbuson continues to cement his status as a “bankable” lead.
Strategic Distribution: FilmOne’s aggressive rollout ensured the film dominated prime time slots.
Regional Integration: Strong numbers in Ghana reinforce the growing importance of a unified West African market for theatrical releases.

As the film continues its theatrical run, experts are watching closely to see if it will cross the N500 million mark, a feat that would move it from a “yearly hit” to an all-time Nollywood classic.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Love and New Notes has cemented Timini Egbuson’s status as Nollywood’s premier box office draw, grossing N328 million to become the top West African film of 2026.

The film’s success proves that combining high-stakes historical commentary (the 1984 currency reform) with star-driven romance is a winning formula for commercial viability in the modern theatrical landscape.
