Davido Opens Up on Family’s Long Tradition

Afrobeats megastar Davido has pulled back the curtain on a family legacy that predates his global music stardom by decades, revealing in a widely circulated interview that overseas education has been an Adeleke family custom since his grandfather’s era.

The 33-year-old singer, born David Adedeji Adeleke, explained that the pattern was set in motion by his grandfather, a former Nigerian senator, who made it a priority to send his children to study in the United States.

Davido’s own father followed that path, enrolling at a university in Kentucky, a detail the singer offered as evidence that his family’s ties to America run far deeper than his own upbringing between Lagos and the U.S.

Background reporting fills in more of that lineage. Davido’s grandfather, Raji Ayoola Adeleke, was himself a senator, and the family’s political roots trace further back to the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, who became the first civilian governor of Osun State in 1992 before serving two terms in the National Assembly.

That political thread continues today: Davido’s uncle, Ademola Adeleke, is the sitting governor of Osun State, keeping the family firmly embedded in Nigerian politics.

On the business side, Davido’s father, Adedeji Adeleke, has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s prominent businessmen, with holdings spanning energy, logistics, education, and infrastructure.

In the interview, Davido went further than tracing his father’s academic history, offering a rare glimpse into how his parents’ own paths intersected.

He revealed that his mother and father first crossed paths in London, long before either set foot in the U.S. His mother, he said, hailed from Edo State, while his father is Yoruba with Igbo heritage on his grandmother’s side a multi-ethnic backdrop that mirrors Nigeria’s own diversity.

His mother would later travel to the United States herself, earning a master’s degree that further cemented the family’s American connection.

Davido was born in Atlanta and raised largely in Lagos, an upbringing split between two continents that he credits with shaping his outlook both personally and professionally.

He argued that the exposure gave him a global perspective that has fed directly into his international music career one that has seen him become one of Afrobeats’ most recognizable global ambassadors.

The revelations arrive at an interesting moment for the star. Davido has recently signaled his own commitment to continuing the family’s educational tradition, announcing plans to pursue a master’s degree of his own in the coming period a move that observers have linked to his growing political engagement in Osun State, where he has thrown his weight behind his uncle’s campaign.

For a singer whose lyrics have long name-checked wealth, family, and legacy, the interview offered something different: a candid acknowledgment that the privilege underpinning his global rise was neither accidental nor new, but the product of a family strategy carried out over three generations.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Davido’s global success didn’t emerge in a vacuum; it’s the product of a three-generation family tradition of overseas education, rooted in his grandfather’s political-era decision to send his children to America.

What looks like personal achievement is, by the singer’s own account, inherited privilege: access, exposure, and international education passed down from senator to businessman to global superstar.

The real story isn’t the interview itself, but the reminder that in Nigeria, generational wealth and connections, not just talent, often shape who gets to “make it” on the world stage.
