The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has officially announced Hon. Fred Agbedi as the Minority Leader of the 10th House of Representatives.
The announcement came on Thursday following a brief protest by opposition lawmakers at the National Assembly.
The lawmakers had insisted that plenary proceedings would not begin until Agbedi was formally announced as the Minority Leader of the House.
A video that circulated on social media showed members of the opposition caucus chanting, “No announcement, no sitting,” as they demanded a resolution of the minority leadership issue.
The protesting lawmakers were identified as members of the G-60 opposition caucus in the House of Representatives.
The group, led by Ikenga Imo-Ugochinyere, endorsed Agbedi, who represents Sagbama-Ekeremor Federal Constituency in Bayelsa State, for the position of Minority Leader.
They also supported Abdusammad Dasuki as Deputy Minority Leader.
The lawmakers gathered at the National Assembly complex and maintained that the House leadership needed to address the issue of minority leadership before legislative business could proceed.
They warned that plenary activities would be disrupted if the matter remained unresolved.
The situation was eventually brought to an end after Speaker Abbas officially announced Agbedi as the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives.
