Several military and police officers, along with civilians, have been killed following a deadly ambush by gunmen in Giro Masa community, located in Shanga Local Government Area.

The attack, which occurred on Tuesday night, reportedly claimed the lives of an unspecified number of security personnel, as well as two residents of the community.

According to local sources, the armed attackers had been operating within the area before security operatives traced them to a construction company yard. Acting on intelligence reportedly provided by residents, troops were deployed to secure the location. However, the gunmen ambushed the security team while they were on their way to the scene.

During the assault, the attackers also set two military gun trucks ablaze, intensifying the scale of destruction.

Residents who spoke anonymously described the situation as violent and chaotic.

“The gunmen came into our village and were heading towards the construction company yard. We alerted security personnel, but they were ambushed,” one resident said.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from authorities, including the Nigerian Army or the Nigeria Police Force, regarding the incident.

Further details are expected as investigations unfold and authorities respond to the attack.

What you should know

The attack in Kebbi highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of northern Nigeria, where armed groups continue to target both civilians and security personnel.

Ambushes on military and police units have become a recurring tactic, complicating efforts to restore stability.

Incidents like this raise concerns about intelligence coordination, response strategies, and the safety of communities caught in conflict zones.
