Anthony Gordon converted two penalties as Newcastle cruised to a 4-0 win against Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday, securing their first Champions League points of the season.
Nick Woltemade opened the scoring in Brussels, flicking in Sandro Tonali’s shot after 17 minutes, before Gordon doubled the advantage from the penalty spot just before half-time. Sweden’s Anthony Elanga, who won the first penalty, threatened again after the restart, but Union pushed back with a spell of pressure that was repelled by goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Gordon struck again from the spot just after the hour following a VAR-confirmed handball by Kamiel Van de Perre, giving Newcastle breathing space. Harvey Barnes then came off the bench to seal the victory, finishing a swift counterattack late in the game.
The win offered a strong response from Eddie Howe’s side after their Premier League loss to Arsenal and their European defeat to Barcelona. It also ended Union’s 10-match unbeaten run across all competitions.
