United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday issued an urgent appeal for restraint in the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel, warning that the violence is rapidly spiraling toward an uncontrollable regional crisis.
Speaking at a Security Council session, Guterres implored all involved, and those considering joining the fight, to prioritize diplomacy and avoid a broader war.
“To the parties to the conflict, the potential parties to the conflict, and to the Security Council as the representative of the international community, I have a simple and clear message: Give peace a chance,” he said.
Though he did not name specific countries, his message appeared to be a veiled appeal to the United States, which is currently deliberating possible military involvement in support of Israel.
Guterres warned that the situation is deteriorating faster than the global community may realize.
“We are not drifting toward crisis, we are racing toward it,” he said. “We are not witnessing isolated incidents, we are on course to potential chaos.”
He cautioned that the further expansion of hostilities between Iran and Israel could trigger a regional conflagration, drawing in other actors and destabilizing the Middle East.
“The expansion of this conflict could ignite a fire that no one can control. We must not let that happen,” Guterres urged.
The UN chief’s comments come amid increased military activity, with Israel having launched strikes on Tehran earlier in the week and the US still weighing its response. Observers fear a tipping point is near, with high stakes for both regional and global peace.
