The government of Germany has declined the nomination of Femi Fani-Kayode as Nigeria’s ambassador, following concerns over his past public conduct and comments.

President Bola Tinubu had approved Fani-Kayode’s appointment on March 6, 2026, assigning him to a country in Central Europe.

However, the German authorities turned down the nomination on March 13 after reviewing his profile, People’s Gazette reports.

Officials in Germany were said to be uncomfortable with his past behaviour and statements, which they considered divisive along ethnic and religious lines.

His record of controversial remarks was seen as unsuitable for a diplomatic role in their country.

The rejection came shortly after Fani-Kayode was involved in a disagreement with Richard Montgomery during a Ramadan gathering in Abuja.

The event was hosted by Bashir Lado, who serves as a presidential adviser on Senate matters.

Within the Nigerian government, there are indications that he may be assigned to another country instead, with South Africa being considered as a possible option.

However, he debunked the reports via a tweet.

He wrote: “Fake news everywhere 🤣. These opposition elements are so pained by my appointment and they are doing everything to discredit me and scuttle it. Whether they like it or not I will serve my country! Keep crying! 🤣.”

Fani-Kayode has long been known in Nigeria’s political space for his outspoken style and frequent controversial opinions shared both in the media and on social platforms.

In 2020, he faced public criticism after verbally attacking a journalist, Charles Eyo, who questioned the source of funds for his nationwide tour.

The incident happened during a press briefing in Calabar. Following widespread reactions, he later apologized.

He has also been involved in a public dispute with his former partner, Precious Chikwendu, over issues relating to their children.
