With the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage reaching its dramatic conclusion across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, nineteen teams have booked their places in the Round of 32.
Forty-eight teams entered the tournament’s expanded format. Only 32 will advance, and nineteen have already punched their tickets. The rest will be decided when the curtain falls on the group stage.
It was the host nations who led the charge. Mexico was the first side to qualify, claiming top spot in Group A after a 1-0 win over South Korea.
The United States followed swiftly, finishing top of Group D on the back of a 2-0 victory over Australia. Co-host Canada also advanced, though coach Jesse Marsch will be disappointed that his side lost top spot after defeat to Switzerland on the final matchday.
Europe’s powerhouses were not far behind. Germany became the third team through, advancing with a 2-1 victory over the Ivory Coast in their first knockout appearance since 2014, after back-to-back group stage exits in 2018 and in Qatar. Reigning champions Argentina, inspired by a record-breaking Lionel Messi, also secured top spot in their group, as did Brazil and France.
Among the tournament’s more stirring stories is South Africa. Bafana Bafana was given only a 19.7% chance of qualifying before their final group match, yet they are through, and it is the first time in their history that they will participate in the knockout rounds.
There was drama on the South American front, too. Ecuador squeezed into the last 32 with a stunning 2-1 upset over Germany, Gonzalo Plata jabbing home the winner 13 minutes from time to send the South Americans through.
Switzerland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Morocco, and Colombia have also confirmed their places, along with the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Norway, Paraguay, and the Ivory Coast, rounding out the nineteen confirmed qualifiers.
Here is the complete list of teams confirmed for the Round of 32:
Mexico, USA, Germany, Argentina, France, Norway, Colombia, Switzerland, Canada, Brazil, Morocco, South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, and Australia.
The remaining thirteen spots will be filled when the group stage concludes, with several berths still fiercely contested. Groups G and H are the tightest, with all four teams in each pool still in contention heading into their final matches.
The expanded format introduced at this World Cup, following the tournament’s growth from 32 to 48 teams, means the top two finishers from each of the twelve groups, plus the eight best third-place sides, will all advance to the knockout rounds.
The specific matchups for the Round of 32 will depend on which groups the eight third-place qualifiers emerge from, with 51 possible permutations remaining ahead of the final matchday.
The knockout rounds begin Sunday, June 28. What is certain is this: the world’s biggest tournament has already delivered upsets, history, and moments of pure football theater. And the main event is only just beginning.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Nineteen teams are already through to the knockout rounds of the most expanded World Cup ever, 48 teams across three nations, with a brand-new round of 32 as the stage.
The host nations (USA, Mexico, and Canada) all advanced, joined by the usual giants in Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and France. But the real headline belongs to South Africa, who defied less than a 20% qualification odds to reach the knockouts for the very first time, and Ecuador, who stunned Germany to sneak through on the final whistle.
Thirteen spots remain, the bracket is still forming, and the knockout stage kicks off June 28. Simply put, the group phase delivered, and the best is still to come.
