Nigeria Eliminated from WAFCON 2026

The defending champions’ reign at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has come to an abrupt and painful end.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons crashed out of WAFCON 2026 at the quarter-final stage on Sunday, beaten 1-0 by fierce rivals Cameroon at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in a result that will sting for years to come.

The damage was done early. In the 19th minute, nineteen-year-old Cameroonian defender Myriam Nyadjou stepped up to a free-kick and drove it low and hard past goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie to give the Indomitable Lionesses the lead.

It was a strike against the run of play  Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade had already tested the Cameroonian goalkeeper with a rasping effort inside the first minute but from that moment, Nigeria could never find an equalizer.

Nigeria went into the break trailing by that lone goal despite dominating the closing stages of the first half, and the pattern repeated after the restart. By the 70th minute the Super Falcons still hadn’t found the breakthrough, with the Cameroonian goalkeeper producing a smart save from close range to keep her side’s slender lead intact.

Chances came and went for Nigeria, but the finishing touch never arrived, and Cameroon held firm to record just their second win over the Super Falcons in fourteen meetings at the WAFCON finals a rivalry in which Nigeria had previously won nine matches in regulation time and two more on penalties.

The defeat is a bitter one on multiple fronts. Not only does it end Nigeria’s title defense, this was Cameroon’s revenge for a 1-0 defeat to Nigeria in their only previous WAFCON quarter-final meeting, back in 2022 it also strips the Super Falcons of the automatic World Cup ticket that came with the fixture.

The four quarter-final winners at this tournament qualify directly for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, meaning Cameroon, not Nigeria, will march on toward the semi-finals in Rabat and a guaranteed place at next year’s global showpiece.

For a Nigerian side that had already stumbled through a rocky group stage , Justine Madugu’s team opened with a 3-2 loss to Malawi before recovering with wins over Zambia and Egypt to scrape through as Group C runners-up Sunday’s exit compounds a difficult campaign.

It leaves Nigeria facing a far more uncertain, indirect route if they hope to secure a spot at the expanded 2027 World Cup, while Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses celebrate a famous, historic victory over the continent’s most decorated women’s team.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Nigeria’s WAFCON title defense is over. Cameroon’s 1-0 win , sealed by Myriam Nyadjou’s 19th-minute free-kick  knocked the Super Falcons out at the quarter-final stage and, more importantly, cost them the automatic ticket to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil that came with the fixture.

Nigeria dominated for long stretches but couldn’t convert their chances, and in a winner-takes-all tie, that wastefulness proved more decisive than the run of play.
