The race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is intensifying across Africa, with Egypt and Morocco edging closer to sealing their places, while Nigeria faces a daunting challenge to stay in contention.
With just four rounds of matches left in the nine qualifying groups, the stakes are higher than ever for the continent’s football giants.

In Group A, Egypt hold a five-point lead over Burkina Faso and could confirm their place with two more wins. Fixtures against Ethiopia and Djibouti will be crucial in settling the group’s direction.
Group B is shaping up as one of the most competitive, with DR Congo, Senegal, and Sudan separated by a single point. Senegal still have to play both rivals, while Sudan, chasing their first-ever World Cup appearance, continue their campaign amid ongoing turmoil at home.

For Group C, Nigeria’s chances are slipping away. Sitting fourth with just seven points, the Super Eagles must win against Rwanda at home and then away to leaders South Africa. A ruling on South Africa’s alleged use of an ineligible player could alter the standings, but Nigeria’s path remains difficult.
In Group D, Cape Verde lead Cameroon by one point, and their upcoming clash could prove decisive. While Cape Verde dream of a historic qualification, Libya and Angola remain in the mix.

Group E has Morocco on the brink of history with a flawless record of five wins from five matches. The Atlas Lions face Niger and Zambia next, and could soon become Africa’s first confirmed qualifiers.
In Group F, Ivory Coast and Gabon are separated by just one point, with their direct encounter expected to define the race. Both nations have rediscovered form and look set for a tense finish.
Group G sees Algeria three points ahead of Mozambique, though they must remain sharp with games against Botswana and Guinea. Mozambique, meanwhile, face Uganda and Botswana as they chase an upset.
For Group H, Tunisia are in a commanding position with a four-point cushion over Namibia. Wins against Liberia and Equatorial Guinea could see them through, though the group could still be affected by Equatorial Guinea’s appeal over eligibility issues.

Finally, in Group I, Ghana are on track for redemption after their AFCON disappointment, holding a three-point lead over Comoros. Victories against Chad and Comoros could secure their ticket, while Comoros must get past Mali to stay alive.
