The Rivers State Police Command has issued a warning against the trending practice where individuals collect transport money from men but fail to attend the agreed meeting, stressing that such conduct is a criminal offence.
In a widely circulated video, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko, said the behaviour amounts to fraud and is punishable by law.
“Taking transport fare from a man without actually going to meet him is an offence. It is regarded as obtaining money under false pretence, and the law considers it a crime,” she explained.
Iringe-Koko further stated that anyone caught in such deceitful acts could face arrest and prosecution if the matter is reported. She urged people to avoid engaging in financial transactions built on dishonesty.
The video has triggered extensive reactions on social media. While some Nigerians argue that the issue reflects more of a moral lapse than a legal violation, others support the police position, insisting that it falls under fraud.
