Atletico Madrid secured a decisive 2-0 advantage over Barcelona after goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth in a fiercely contested Champions League quarter-final first-leg encounter on Wednesday.

The Spanish league leaders had initially controlled proceedings in the all-Spanish showdown at Camp Nou until a turning point emerged when Pau Cubarsi was dismissed for fouling Giuliano Simeone, who was advancing clear on goal.

Alvarez capitalised on the opportunity by curling in the resulting free-kick, while Sorloth later extended the lead with roughly 20 minutes remaining, placing Atletico in a strong position to advance to the semi-finals.

Under the guidance of Diego Simeone, Atletico, yet to claim a Champions League title, previously reached the finals in 2014 and 2016 but fell short against rivals Real Madrid on both occasions.

“We have things to improve and learn from… we’re happy for the win, but there’s a long way to go,” Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann told Movistar.

“We’re very far from the semis, we’re 90 or more minutes away… we’re confident but keeping our feet on the ground.”

Barcelona, who reached the semi-finals last season, now face a daunting challenge ahead of the return leg in Madrid next Tuesday if they hope to reclaim the title they last lifted in 2015.

“It will be tough there but if anyone can do it, it’s us,” Barca defender Ronald Araujo told Movistar.

“We’ve got great players, quality, personality, we will look for the comeback.”

Atletico had already eliminated Barcelona from the Copa del Rey semi-finals in March, making this clash the second of three meetings between the teams within a short span.

Barcelona began brightly, with Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, posing the primary attacking threat from the left flank.

Meanwhile, Atletico concentrated defensive efforts on limiting teenage sensation Lamine Yamal on the right, inadvertently allowing Rashford more freedom.

Rashford generated the earliest opportunities, but Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso denied him. At the opposite end, Alvarez tested Barcelona’s Joan Garcia.

The England international continued to trouble the defence, narrowly missing with a volley before having a goal ruled out for offside involving Yamal in the buildup.

Despite being closely marked, Yamal showcased impressive skill to create space, only to see his effort blocked by Robin Le Normand.

Veteran midfielder Koke escaped further punishment despite committing multiple fouls, drawing frustration from Barcelona supporters.

Hansi Flick’s side maintained control for much of the half, with Griezmann largely subdued against his former club. However, the match shifted dramatically when Cubarsi brought down Giuliano Simeone while chasing a through ball.

Referee Istvan Kovacs initially issued a yellow card but upgraded it to a red after consulting VAR, leaving Barcelona at a numerical disadvantage. Alvarez then struck a superb free-kick into the top corner to break the deadlock.

Barca coach Flick responded at half-time, substituting Robert Lewandowski and Pedri for Gavi and Fermin Lopez in a bid to inject energy into the side.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Barcelona remained competitive, continuing to create chances primarily through Rashford. Yamal set him up for a clear opportunity, but after rounding Musso, he could only find the side netting.

Le Normand later fouled Yamal near the box, but Rashford’s resulting free-kick was tipped over.

Against the flow of play, Atletico struck again. Griezmann combined effectively with Matteo Ruggieri, whose delivery found Sorloth. The striker overpowered Gerard Martin and fired home beyond Garcia.

Barcelona suffered their first home defeat since Camp Nou reopened in November 2025, while Simeone recorded his first-ever victory at the stadium in his 14-year tenure with Atletico.

Musso made further saves to deny Joao Cancelo and Yamal late on, but Barcelona were unable to reduce the deficit, leaving the five-time champions with a significant uphill task ahead of the second leg.

What you should know

Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 win over Barcelona gives them a strong advantage heading into the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final.

The match turned after Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsi was sent off, allowing Julian Alvarez to score from a free-kick before Alexander Sorloth added a second goal.

Despite playing with 10 men, Barcelona created chances but failed to score. Atletico’s disciplined defending and clinical finishing proved decisive.

Barcelona must now overturn a two-goal deficit away from home, while Atletico are in a commanding position to reach the semi-finals if they maintain their composure.
