Joao Pedro struck twice in the second half to propel Chelsea into the Champions League last 16 after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Napoli on Wednesday, sealing a top-eight finish and ending the Italian side’s European campaign.

The Brazilian forward delivered two stunning finishes in Naples as Chelsea overturned a half-time deficit to complete an impressive comeback and close the league phase on a high note.

Chelsea appeared destined for a play-off place at the interval after an injury-hit Napoli, who needed a win to remain in the competition, went into the break ahead through goals from Antonio Vergara and Rasmus Hojlund.

However, Pedro levelled the contest in the 61st minute with a powerful strike before sealing a crucial victory eight minutes from time, converting a pass from Cole Palmer to silence the home crowd.

The win further underlined Liam Rosenior’s strong start to life as Chelsea manager, marking his fifth victory in six matches since taking charge at the London club.

Chelsea’s only setback during that run was a narrow defeat to Premier League leaders Arsenal in the English League Cup, and the Blues once again demonstrated resilience and composure to prevail in a hostile environment in Naples.

Napoli were without several key players, including long-term absentees Kevin De Bruyne and Andre-Frank Anguissa, and bowed out of the Champions League despite a spirited display that capped a disappointing European campaign.

Antonio Conte’s side were applauded off the pitch at full-time, with supporters acknowledging their brave but ultimately unsuccessful effort to remain in Europe’s elite club competition.

What you should know
Chelsea’s victory in Naples secured automatic qualification to the Champions League last 16, avoiding the play-off round and reinforcing the club’s resurgence under new manager Liam Rosenior.

Joao Pedro’s brace highlighted Chelsea’s attacking quality and ability to respond under pressure, while Napoli’s elimination reflected a challenging European season compounded by injuries to key players.

Despite the exit, Napoli earned plaudits for their fighting performance, while Chelsea’s top-eight finish positions them as strong contenders heading into the knockout stages.
