FULL LIST: US Tightens Trade Screws on Canada with New Import Bans

The trade rift between the United States and Canada deepened this week after President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders banning a swath of Canadian goods from entering the US market, in direct response to Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs taking effect.

The measures, set to take hold on September 29, mark the latest escalation in a dispute that has simmered for months between two economies long considered inseparable trading partners.

The White House framed the move as a response to what it called discriminatory Canadian trade practices, specifically Ottawa’s decision to slap tariffs on American goods while leaving similar imports from other countries untouched.

Despite both governments signaling a desire to reach an agreement, talks have been stalled since they broke down in late August, and no new negotiating sessions have been scheduled.

Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc called the fresh American restrictions “unjustified,” pledging to shield Canadian workers and businesses while pursuing dialogue with his US counterpart “in good faith.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney struck a more resigned tone, acknowledging that reducing Canada’s economic reliance on its southern neighbor “will come at a cost,,” though he insisted the cost of doing nothing would be higher.

The economic stakes are significant given how intertwined the two economies are; more than two-thirds of everything Canada exports flows south of the border.

Spirits, dairy, and motorbikes alone represented hundreds of millions of dollars in trade last year, though analysts note the new ban technically touches only a small slice, roughly a quarter of one percent, of Canada’s total exports to the US. Even so, economists argue the real intent isn’t fiscal; it’s political pressure, aimed at inflicting pain rather than generating revenue.

That pressure follows an earlier round of steep US tariffs of roughly 50% on some $20 billion worth of Canadian goods that hit furniture makers, wineries, and sporting and fishing equipment manufacturers particularly hard. Canada answered in kind with matching duties on American steel, apparel, and furniture.

According to the White House orders, a range of Canadian products will be barred outright from the US market, while others will face steeper tariffs rather than an outright prohibition.

Products banned outright include:

  • Certain dairy products, such as whey
  • Cane molasses
  • Non-alcoholic beer
  • A broad range of wine, rum, and vodka products
  • Malt-based beer
  • Motorbikes and mopeds

Products facing increased tariffs (not banned) include:

  • Various cheeses
  • Raw hides and skins
  • Paper products
  • Certain furniture and mattresses
  • Select metals, including aluminum and iron
  • Motorboats
  • Golf carts
  • Fishing rod parts and accessories
  • Switchboards

Analysts say the targeting of Canada’s dairy sector is no accident; it’s one of the country’s most politically sensitive industries, long protected by a system of production quotas, fixed pricing, and import caps that Trump has repeatedly criticized as unfair to American farmers.

Trade watchers caution that the confrontational tone of Washington’s latest proclamations may make it harder, not easier, to get both sides back to the table. Even so, most expect Canada to hold its current course rather than escalate further in the near term, instead shoring up domestic industries against the fallout.

The dispute has also spilled into more symbolic territory; last month’s order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” drew sharp backlash on both sides of the border, underscoring just how personal the rift has become beyond the numbers on a tariff sheet.

For now, businesses and consumers on both sides of the 49th parallel are bracing for higher prices and thinner margins, with economists warning that in a trade war this deeply entangled, ordinary people, not governments, tend to absorb the biggest losses.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

This dispute isn’t really about revenue; it’s a pressure campaign. The US import ban covers a tiny fraction of Canada’s exports, but its purpose is political: forcing Ottawa back to the negotiating table by targeting sensitive industries like dairy.

With talks stalled and both sides doubling down on tariffs, the real cost will fall on ordinary consumers and businesses on both sides of the border, not on the governments trading blows.
