Tanzania is in mourning today following the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the nation’s first-ever First Gentleman, who passed away while receiving treatment for a longstanding heart condition at a hospital in Zanzibar.
Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi delivered the official announcement in a solemn national address on Monday morning, informing citizens of Ameir’s death at Kumbakumba Hospital in Zanzibar City, though other accounts identify the facility as Mzena Memorial Hospital.
Reports on the precise hour of death vary, with some placing it in the early morning hours and others around 8 a.m. local time, a discrepancy that has not yet been clarified by official channels.
“Fellow citizens, with deep sorrow, I inform you of the passing of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan,” Ndejembi told the nation, extending condolences to the President, the family, relatives, friends, and all Tanzanians.
Ameir, an agricultural academic who had also worked as a retired agricultural officer, was known for keeping an unusually low public profile for a presidential spouse, rarely accompanying his wife to official state functions.
He assumed the unofficial title of First Gentleman, the first man in Tanzanian history to hold the position, on 17 March 2021, when Samia was sworn in following the sudden death of President John Magufuli, becoming the country’s first female president.
The couple had been married since 1978, long before Samia’s rise through national politics, and raised four children together: three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, has followed her parents into public service and currently sits in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.
Funeral arrangements are currently underway in Kizimkazi, a village in southern Unguja where the family has deep roots, though authorities have not yet released a confirmed date or full program for the burial.
News of Ameir’s death prompted an outpouring of condolences from regional and continental leaders. Kenyan President William Ruto was among the first to respond, writing on X that he had received the news “with deep sorrow,” adding that “President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son.”
Ruto affirmed that “Kenya stands with our Tanzanian brothers and sisters in this moment of grief” and closed his message with a prayer for strength and eternal rest for the departed.
The African Union also issued a formal statement of condolence. AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf conveyed his “deepest condolences” to President Samia, her family, and the people of Tanzania, extending “profound sympathy” and wishing the family “strength, courage, and solace.”
Youssouf closed his statement with a prayer for the peaceful repose of Ameir’s soul, invoking the Islamic phrase of condolence, “Inalilahi wainailehi rajiun.” “To God we belong, and to Him we shall return.”
The death casts an unexpected shadow over Tanzania just months after President Samia began a second term in office, having won re-election in 2025.
