Manchester City Completes Signing of Moroccan Star Bouaddi

Manchester City has wrapped up one of the summer’s most closely watched transfer sagas, confirming the signing of Moroccan international Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille on a five-year deal that ties him to the Etihad Stadium until 2031.

The move, completed for an initial €95 million with a further €5 million in potential bonuses, taking the total package to around €100 million, makes the 18-year-old the most expensive teenager in Premier League history, eclipsing the €70 million Manchester United paid Lille for Leny Yoro back in 2024.

For a club in the midst of rebuilding its midfield engine room, the arrival of Bouaddi is as much a statement of intent as it is a football signing.

It comes just weeks after City waved goodbye to Rodri, their Ballon d’Or-winning anchor, who departed for Barcelona, while long-serving Bernardo Silva and Dutch international Tijjani Reijnders have also exited the club this summer.

City are also said to be tracking Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández and Roma’s Manu Koné as they continue to explore further midfield reinforcements, with uncertainty lingering over Nico González’s own future at the club.

Bouaddi’s rise has been rapid by any standard. Having joined Lille’s academy as a boy, he signed his first professional contract with the French club in August 2023 and, weeks later, became the youngest player ever to appear in a European club competition, making his debut in the Conference League at 16 years and three days old, a record that eclipsed a mark set at Lille almost half a century earlier.

He went on to rack up 96 senior appearances in Ligue 1 and European competition, establishing himself as a first-team fixture well before most players his age have left academy football behind.

His breakout summer, however, came on the international stage. Having represented France at the youth level, Bouaddi elected to play for Morocco, the country of his parents’ birth, and was a standout performer as the Atlas Lions reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.

He started five of Morocco’s six matches at the tournament and was particularly impressive in their opening draw against Brazil, catching the eye of scouts across Europe in the process.

Speaking after putting pen to paper, Bouaddi did not hide his excitement at joining a club he has followed since childhood. He described City as, in his eyes, the best club in the world and spoke of the pride he felt at finally being able to call himself a City player.

The midfielder also referenced growing up watching Pep Guardiola’s transformation of the club while pointing to City’s reputation for elite talent and infrastructure as reasons behind his decision.

City’s official statement struck a similarly warm tone, framing the teenager’s achievements to date as merely the beginning of a career already brimming with promise.

The club is banking on Bouaddi’s technical quality and composure on the ball translating quickly to the demands of English football under new head coach Enzo Maresca, who has already had to experiment in midfield, deploying center-back Marc Guéhi in a holding role during City’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth in the absence of a like-for-like Rodri replacement.

Bouaddi’s arrival follows City’s other headline midfield addition of the window: England international Elliot Anderson signed from Nottingham Forest for a club-record fee earlier in the transfer period.

Together, the pair represent the first pieces of what City hope will be a retooled midfield capable of carrying the team through the post-Rodri era, even as speculation continues over further additions before the transfer window closes.

For Lille, the sale represents a familiar story for a club that has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most productive academies, having previously profited from developments such as Yoro’s move to Old Trafford.

The fee secured for Bouaddi, comfortably the largest in the French club’s history, gives Lille significant room to reinvest as they prepare for the season ahead, with the club having already lined up a successor to fill the void left in central midfield.

As for Bouaddi himself, the challenge now shifts from promise to production. Still a teenager, and with the weight of a nine-figure fee attached to his name, he arrives at a club accustomed to winning and with expectations to match.

Whether he can settle quickly into Maresca’s system and help steer City back to the summit of English and European football may go a long way toward defining not just his own career but City’s next chapter.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Manchester City’s €100m signing of Ayyoub Bouaddi isn’t just about adding a gifted 18-year-old; it’s the clearest signal yet of how the club plans to replace Rodri.

With Bernardo Silva and Reijnders also gone, City are betting that a teenager who impressed at the World Cup can grow into the control-and-composure role that defined their midfield for years.

The fee makes him the most expensive teenage signing in Premier League history, so the pressure to deliver arrives immediately; there’s little room for a slow adjustment period.
