Chelsea Confirm 2026/27 Squad

Chelsea have confirmed their 2026/27 squad numbers, and one change stands out: João Pedro takes the No. 9 shirt long reserved for the club’s leading striker after a debut season of 20 goals, nine assists, and the Player of the Season award.

The Brazilian switches from the No. 20 he wore last term, and his promotion comes at the expense of Liam Delap, who is demoted to No. 12.

It’s a striking reversal of fortunes for Delap. Delap, who had held the No. 9 since arriving from Ipswich Town in 2025, endured a difficult first season at Stamford Bridge, managing just three goals in 47 appearances.

With his effectiveness under scrutiny, he’s now strongly linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, with reports suggesting Italian side Como have already shown interest in securing his services, though Delap is said to be willing to wait for domestic opportunities before deciding his future.

Elsewhere, Wesley Fofana has taken over the No. 3 shirt, which had sat vacant after Marc Cucurella’s transfer to Real Madrid. That switch frees up Fofana’s old No. 29, which passes to summer arrival Pep Chavarria.

The new-signing roll call is a reflection of a busy and expensive window under new head coach Xabi Alonso, who is beginning his first season in Premier League management after joining from Real Madrid.

Morgan Rogers arrives from Aston Villa in a club-record deal reported at £120 million and will wear No. 17, the same number he wore for England at the 2026 World Cup.

He’ll line up alongside close friend Cole Palmer, who retains his familiar No. 10. Defender Maxence Lacroix joins from Crystal Palace for a fee in the region of £52 million, taking No. 5, while Marco Palestra (No. 2) and Valentin Barco (No. 4) round out a defensive rebuild that has also seen Tosin Adarabioyo shifted down to No. 38 to accommodate Barco’s arrival.

Jordan Henderson, meanwhile, has been given the No. 14 shirt, and Danny Welbeck, another high-profile addition, takes No. 18.

Among the younger recruits, Emmanuel Emegha (No. 22), Geovany Quenda (No. 23), and Chavarria give the squad a distinctly international, forward-thinking look, while academy graduates Reggie Watson, Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, and Tayo Subuloye have also been assigned senior numbers (31, 32, and 37, respectively), though it remains unclear whether the trio has been officially promoted to the first-team squad.

Fittingly, two of the club’s most storied numbers remain conspicuously unclaimed. No. 3 has since been taken by Fofana, but earlier in the process it stood out as untouched territory once worn famously by Ashley Cole during his eight-year spell at Stamford Bridge, while No. 26, the shirt made legendary by club great John Terry, has been left vacant altogether, seemingly out of respect and to avoid unfavorable comparisons.

The changes were confirmed on Chelsea’s official website as the club shifts its identity under Alonso, and with no European football on offer this season after finishing 10th and missing out on continental competition last term, all focus for the newly numbered Blues will fall squarely on the Premier League, beginning with the season opener away at Fulham.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

João Pedro’s move from No. 20 to the iconic No. 9 shirt marks a symbolic changing of the guard at Chelsea, rewarding his standout debut season and Player of the Year form while pushing predecessor Liam Delap, whose struggles saw him manage just three goals in 47 appearances, down to No. 12 and reportedly closer to an exit.

It’s less a routine numbers reshuffle and more a statement of intent from Xabi Alonso as he stamps his authority on a squad rebuilt through major signings like Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix, ahead of a season where domestic success is now the sole priority.
