Barcelona Acquires New Player

Barcelona have confirmed the signing of Rodri from Manchester City, closing the book on a transfer saga that stretched across several weeks of the summer window.

The Spain captain, fresh off being named player of the tournament as his country lifted the World Cup, has put pen to paper on a four-year contract worth £65.4m, ending a seven-season stay in Manchester that yielded 12 major honours.

The move was far from straightforward. Barcelona twice had bids knocked back, an opening offer of around £40m and a follow-up of £55m, before a third, improved package finally satisfied City’s valuation of their departing midfield anchor.

Sources described the total package as worth €76.5 million, roughly £65.3 million, once add-ons were factored in, with the two clubs said to have exchanged paperwork over the weekend before the deal was rubber-stamped.

Notably, City’s resistance wasn’t just about the fee. Rodri’s exit leaves a significant gap in the middle of the park, with pundits pointing to City’s struggles without him in the Community Shield as evidence of how central he remains to the side.

His importance was underlined further by his role in the 2023 treble, including the winning goal in the Champions League final victory over Inter Milan in Istanbul.

Injuries, an ACL tear, and a nagging issue from the Euro 2024 final disrupted his last two campaigns at the Etihad. Still, he returned to imperious form for Spain this summer, collecting the World Cup’s top individual honour.

Behind the scenes, the destination wasn’t a foregone conclusion. Talks with Real Madrid reportedly broke down, and Barcelona gained momentum once that avenue closed, with head coach Hansi Flick playing a personal role in winning Rodri over. His agent later confirmed he preferred the move to Camp Nou over Real Madrid’s offer.

At Barcelona, the midfielder will wear the No. 16 shirt and has committed to the Catalan club until 30 June 2030. Sources close to the club described the signing as a “statement” one, with Flick keen to add leadership to a squad already chasing back-to-back LaLiga titles, particularly with Frenkie de Jong facing a spell on the sidelines due to injury.

Flick had made the case publicly for reinforcements even before a ball was kicked this term, arguing in the spring that his side needed more leaders on the pitch to manage key moments.

Rodri’s own words on the move struck a familiar note for a player embracing a fresh chapter after nearly a decade of dominance in England, gratitude for what came before, paired with hunger for a new challenge under a coach whose style he expects will stretch him further as a player.

His farewell message to City supporters leaned heavily on the personal rather than the professional, reflecting on how Manchester had shaped his life away from football as much as his medal collection had defined it on the pitch.

For City, the sale caps a busy summer of squad business that has already seen them break their transfer record. The club spent £116m on Elliot Anderson and has been linked with a £120m move for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, a pursuit that sources suggest was always contingent on Rodri’s departure freeing up both funds and a vacancy in the base of midfield.

Manager Enzo Maresca now faces the task of replacing a player many considered close to irreplaceable, having openly acknowledged that few in the game bring what Rodri did to a midfield.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Rodri’s £65.4m move from Manchester City to Barcelona marks the end of an era at the Etihad and a statement signing for Hansi Flick’s side.

City resisted two lower bids before folding, because Rodri, the reigning World Cup Player of the Tournament and a driving force behind their 2023 treble, is viewed as close to irreplaceable in midfield, and his exit now forces City into the market for a direct replacement.
