The Young Progressives Party (YPP) presidential candidate, Anita Zugwai-Chukwu, has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential election over concerns raised by her family about the security situation in parts of Nigeria.

The party announced her withdrawal on Monday in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Egbeola Wale-Martins.

According to the YPP, Chukwu informed the party leadership of her decision in a letter dated August 12, 2026, following discussions with members of her immediate and extended family.

Chukwu had emerged as the party’s presidential candidate at its third Elective National Convention and Presidential Primary held on May 30, 2026.

Following her withdrawal, the YPP said it tried to find another qualified female aspirant to replace her but was unable to complete the process.

The party therefore conducted a fresh presidential substitution primary in Abuja on Friday, August 21, 2026.

Former Labour Party presidential aspirant, Peter Agada, emerged as the new YPP presidential candidate, while Ndidi Keys was selected as his running mate.

The party said it maintained its requirements of competence, character, capacity and commitment while searching for a replacement.

The YPP also said Chukwu remained an important member of the party and that her withdrawal from the presidential race would not affect her position or contributions to the party.
