Veteran Yoruba actor and Ijala poetry chanter, Alabi Ogundepo, has died at the age of 84.
His death was announced by his daughter, Dupe Ogundepo-Falana, in a statement issued on behalf of the family.
Ogundepo died on Monday, August 24, 2026.
The family described the late actor as “a remarkable literary voice whose poetry and writings reflected his deep appreciation of Yoruba culture, tradition, language, history and the human experience.”
They thanked individuals, institutions, traditional leaders and members of literary communities who had reached out to the family with condolences and support.
The family also asked for privacy and prayers as they mourned the veteran actor.
They added that details of his funeral arrangements would be announced later.
Ogundepo was born in Saki, Oyo State, and became one of the respected figures in Yoruba oral literature.
He was widely known for his mastery of Ijala, the traditional poetry of hunters, as well as his contributions to Yoruba literature and culture.
Through his performances and writings, Ogundepo helped preserve Yoruba language, history and traditional heritage for younger generations.
Beyond his career in entertainment and literature, he was also described as a cultural enthusiast, community leader and mentor.
The family said his wisdom, dignity, compassion and guidance had touched many lives, while his contributions would continue to be remembered.
