President Bassirou Faye of Senegal has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
Faye takes over from Sierra Leone’s President Julius Bio as chairman of the regional bloc.
At the same time, Biram Diop was named the new President of the ECOWAS Commission, replacing Dr. Omar Toure.
Former ECOWAS Chairman, President Bola Tinubu, handed over the leadership of the regional body to President Bio during the 67th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority held in Abuja.
Faye assumes office at a time when ECOWAS continues to face major challenges, including growing security threats, democratic concerns, and the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from the regional bloc.
