The Edo State Police Command has announced a statewide restriction of movement ahead of the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2026.

The order will take effect from 12:00 a.m. and remain in place until 6:00 p.m. as part of measures to maintain peace and ensure the election is conducted without disruption.

The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem.

The command said the restriction would be enforced together with other security agencies to provide a safe environment for voters, election officials and residents during the exercise.

Under the directive, both vehicular and pedestrian movement across the state will not be allowed during the restricted period.

The police, however, said the order does not apply to officials of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), accredited election observers, accredited journalists, security personnel, emergency workers and other essential service providers carrying out official election duties.

The command also disclosed that security operatives have already been deployed across the 18 local government areas of Edo State.

Their assignment includes enforcing the movement restriction, protecting election workers, voters and sensitive election materials, as well as preventing any breakdown of law and order before, during and after the polls.

The police warned that anyone who ignores the movement restriction or takes part in actions capable of disrupting the election would be arrested and made to face prosecution under the law.

Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika assured residents that adequate security arrangements had been put in place to protect lives and property throughout the election period.

He urged eligible voters to remain peaceful and follow the guidelines issued by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission while exercising their voting rights.

He also said the police command would continue working with other security agencies to ensure the local government election is conducted in a peaceful, orderly, free and fair atmosphere across the state.
