The Kebbi State House of Assembly has elected Salihu Maikasuwa-Dangoje, the member representing Sakaba Constituency, as its new Speaker.

His emergence followed a unanimous decision by members of the Assembly during a plenary session held at the legislative complex in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

The election was conducted to fill the vacancy created by the death of former Speaker, Mohammed Usman-Zuru.

The Clerk of the House, Sulaiman Shamaki, presided over the session and explained that the Assembly acted in accordance with constitutional provisions that empower lawmakers to elect a Speaker whenever the position becomes vacant.

The nomination process began when Adamu Birnin-Yauri, who represents Ngaski Constituency, nominated Maikasuwa-Dangoje for the position.

The nomination was seconded by Lawal Haruna, the lawmaker representing Fakai Constituency.

Following the nomination and endorsement, members of the House unanimously agreed to his selection, leading to his election as Speaker.

After assuming office, Maikasuwa-Dangoje thanked his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him.

He assured lawmakers that he would work closely with all members of the Assembly and provide leadership that promotes transparency, cooperation and inclusiveness.

The new Speaker also pledged to strengthen unity among lawmakers and improve the effectiveness of the Assembly in carrying out its legislative responsibilities.

He further promised to support the passage of laws that would improve governance and address the needs of residents across Kebbi State.

The leadership change comes nearly two months after the death of Usman-Zuru, who passed away on April 7 in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
