Mustapha Sule Lamido has formally declared his intention to contest the Jigawa State governorship election after obtaining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nomination form ahead of the 2027 polls.

The former PDP governorship candidate in the 2023 general election submitted the completed nomination form to the Jigawa State PDP Working Committee and other key party stakeholders on Tuesday, seeking their endorsement for his renewed bid.

The submission took place in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, where Lamido met with party leaders and supporters shortly after finalising the process.

Addressing stakeholders at the gathering, Lamido said he had concluded extensive consultations across the state and was now formally seeking the approval of the party to emerge as its flag bearer for the 2027 governorship election.

“We are PDP card-carrying members, and we believe in our party’s philosophy, strength, and resilience to tackle its internal challenges,” he told party members.

The governorship hopeful expressed confidence in the ability of the PDP to once again provide leadership for Jigawa State, insisting that the party remains the strongest platform capable of addressing the state’s developmental challenges.

According to him, the people of Jigawa still maintain strong confidence in the PDP despite recent political setbacks.

“We have confidence in our party, and we believe the people of Jigawa and Nigerians believe in it as well,” Lamido said.

He argued that the PDP has a proven record of governance and remains unmatched in delivering projects and programmes that positively impact citizens.

Lamido maintained that political parties that succeeded the PDP at both state and national levels have failed to deliver on their promises.

“No other political party has matched the PDP’s record of meaningful development and people-oriented governance,” he stated.

He further criticised successive administrations that came after the PDP, accusing them of failing to effectively tackle the country’s pressing social, economic, and security challenges.

“All other political parties that got power after the PDP have failed woefully,” he said.

Lamido argued that instead of improving governance standards, subsequent administrations have deepened the nation’s difficulties through what he described as ineffective policies and poor leadership choices.

He also urged members of the PDP in Jigawa State to unite behind his aspiration and work collectively toward reclaiming power in the state.

The former governorship candidate assured stakeholders that his campaign would remain rooted in the PDP’s traditional values of patriotism, accountability, and service to the people.

He pledged to run an issue-based campaign focused on restoring effective governance and rebuilding public trust in leadership.

Lamido, who is the son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, said his decision to contest is driven by a strong desire to reposition the state and provide leadership capable of addressing the needs of its people.

His formal entry into the race is expected to shape the internal dynamics of the PDP as the party begins preparations for what is likely to be a keenly contested governorship primary.

What You Should Know

Mustapha Sule Lamido was the PDP governorship candidate in Jigawa State during the 2023 general election and remains one of the party’s most prominent political figures in the state.

As the son of former Jigawa governor Sule Lamido, his political ambition carries both legacy significance and strategic weight within the PDP. His formal entry into the 2027 race signals the party’s early preparations to reclaim Jigawa.

The contest is expected to test the PDP’s internal unity and ability to present a strong alternative to the ruling party as political activities ahead of the next election cycle intensify.
