The Nigerian Army has clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest of popular blogger and social media influencer, Justice Mark Chidiebere, popularly known as Justice Crack, following concerns raised over his online engagement with military personnel.

In an official statement signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, and released over the weekend, the Army said it initiated investigations after becoming aware of a social media post by Chidiebere highlighting complaints from some soldiers regarding feeding conditions and general welfare.

According to the military, the matter was initially being examined for a possible breach of the Armed Forces’ Social Media Policy and the alleged dissemination of misleading information.

However, the Army said preliminary investigations uncovered evidence suggesting that Chidiebere had engaged the soldiers in conversations that allegedly sought to stir discontent and encourage acts capable of undermining military discipline.

The statement noted that such interactions raise serious concerns due to their potential implications for national security and institutional order.

“A situation where civilians cultivate vulnerable personnel towards acts of subversion has far-reaching implications on discipline and national security,” the Army stated.

The military further disclosed that Chidiebere was arrested alongside the affected soldiers as part of its ongoing investigation.

While the soldiers involved remain in military custody, the Army confirmed that Justice Chidiebere has since been handed over to relevant civil authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to due process and respect for the rule of law, stressing that its actions were guided by legal procedures.

“We will continue to act within the ambits of the law in safeguarding our sovereignty,” the statement added.

The Army also emphasised its willingness to continue collaborating with other relevant agencies to ensure accountability and proper handling of the matter.

The full statement from the Army explained that the military became aware of the issue after Chidiebere published complaints by some soldiers regarding feeding and welfare conditions on social media.

It stated that during the course of investigations, preliminary findings indicated that the influencer had held extensive discussions with the soldiers, some of which allegedly bordered on incitement and subversive suggestions.

The development has generated mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians calling for transparency in the investigation while others have raised concerns over the limits of civilian engagement with members of the armed forces on internal military matters.

Justice Chidiebere, known widely on social media as Justice Crack, has built a significant online following through commentary on social issues, governance, and public affairs.

As of the time of this report, neither Chidiebere nor his legal representatives had issued an official response to the Army’s claims.

The case is expected to attract further public attention as investigations continue.

What You Should Know

The arrest of Justice Mark Chidiebere, popularly known as Justice Crack, highlights the sensitivity of military-related communications in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Army maintains strict rules governing soldiers’ public engagement, especially on welfare and operational matters. While the Army alleges that the blogger’s interactions with soldiers amounted to incitement and possible subversion, the case also raises broader questions about freedom of expression, whistleblowing, and civilian oversight of institutional welfare concerns.

The outcome of the investigation could set an important precedent regarding how military complaints raised through social media are handled by authorities.
