The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has elected Mr Peter Azubuike as its new state chairman, marking a fresh leadership phase as the party prepares for future electoral contests.

Azubuike emerged on Saturday during the party’s State Congress held in Umuahia, alongside other members of the State Working Committee.

The executives, including Mr Chucks Akamadu as state secretary, Ben Otti as organising secretary and Mr Emenike Iroegbu as publicity secretary, were chosen through a consensus process earlier adopted by delegates.

Speaking shortly after the exercise, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, commended party members for what he described as a peaceful and well-organised congress. He pledged continued support for the new leadership, stressing the need for unity within party ranks.

“I want to congratulate all the newly elected exco members and members of our party for conducting themselves in a decent and organised manner during the congress.

“This is how our things have always been and this is the beginning of a new era, gone are the days when somebody would be pulling from one direction and another would be pulling from another direction. This time we will all pull together from one direction.

“One thing you will not take for granted is that as we have always done, we will support our party and the new leadership of the party. We want a smooth take-off of the new administration,” the governor said.

Otti also acknowledged the contributions of the immediate past Acting State Chairman, Emmanuel Otti, praising his role in stabilising the party during a challenging period leading up to the congress. He encouraged him to remain engaged, noting that there were still opportunities for him to serve the party.

In his acceptance speech, Azubuike pledged to strengthen internal cohesion and expand the party’s reach across Abia State. He expressed appreciation to party leaders for entrusting him with the responsibility and assured members of his commitment to building a more united and competitive structure.

He further stated that the party would leverage the popularity of Governor Otti to improve its electoral performance, particularly as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 general elections.

What you should know

The emergence of new leadership in Abia’s Labour Party signals a strategic reset as internal unity becomes critical ahead of 2027 elections.

Consensus selection reflects efforts to avoid factional disputes that have affected parties nationwide.

Governor Otti’s endorsement strengthens the legitimacy of the new executives and positions the party for consolidation. With opposition politics becoming more competitive, the party’s ability to stay cohesive and expand grassroots support will determine its future success.

Azubuike’s leadership will be tested on organisation, inclusiveness, and electoral performance across the state.
