Governor Abba Yusuf has forwarded the name of Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as the new Deputy Governor of the state.
The nomination was made public in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.
According to the statement, the decision aligns with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which grants a sitting governor the authority to nominate a deputy governor when a vacancy arises.
The position of Deputy Governor became vacant following the voluntary resignation of former occupant, Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026.
Following what was described as extensive consultations with critical stakeholders, the governor urged lawmakers to act swiftly in reviewing and approving Garo’s nomination.

Murtala Garo, aged 48, is described as an experienced political figure with more than two decades of involvement in governance, both in elective roles and appointed offices.
Over the years, he has served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, and Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area through election. He also held leadership roles as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State and later as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
In the 2023 general elections, Garo contested as the Deputy Governorship candidate under the platform of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State.
The nomination, the statement added, forms part of Governor Yusuf’s broader efforts to reinforce governance structures and enhance effective service delivery across the state.
