The Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, has dissolved the State Executive Council.

According to Politics Nigeria, the announcement was made on Thursday after an “extraordinary session” of the council.

The meeting was held to review the performance of the administration during the past two and a half years of the governor’s second term.

The Secretary to the State Government, Ibrahim Njodi, spoke to journalists shortly after the meeting in Gombe. He described the session as a detailed review of the government’s activities and said it served as a “postmortem” of the administration’s work so far.

According to him, the government has recorded strong progress in several key sectors. He noted that the administration achieved “excellent results” in governance and development programmes.

Njodi explained that the decision to dissolve the cabinet was taken after careful consideration. He said the government reviewed both its performance and the current political situation before the decision was made.

He added that the governor decided it was necessary to create space so that commissioners and other political appointees who have political ambitions can pursue them freely.

He stressed that the decision was taken to ensure fairness and provide a level playing field for those who want to contest elections in 2027.

“As part of the governor’s directive, all commissioners are to hand over the affairs of their respective ministries to the Permanent Secretaries not later than Friday, April 10, 2026,” the SSG said.

He added that the directive also affects political appointees, aides and public servants who may want to contest for elective positions.

Njodi said those currently serving in government and interested in joining partisan politics must resign. He stated that such resignations must be completed on or before April 10.

Governor Yahaya, who also serves as Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, thanked the outgoing officials and praised them for their loyalty and dedication to service.

He acknowledged their contributions to the implementation of the administration’s policies and said the achievements recorded so far were the result of teamwork and commitment.

The governor also wished them success in their future plans and gave special recognition to those preparing to contest elective offices in the next election cycle.

Njodi further revealed that the governor appreciated members of the press for their coverage of government activities in the state.

He thanked journalists and encouraged them to remain professional and responsible in their work.

He also called on the media to continue supporting governance and stressed the importance of responsible reporting that promotes accountability and stability.
