Chelsea FC manager Liam Rosenior has confirmed that midfielder Enzo Fernández will miss the club’s next two fixtures after his recent remarks about his future crossed what the club considers an acceptable line.

The Argentine international will be unavailable for the FA Cup quarter-final clash against Port Vale, as well as the Premier League showdown with Manchester City on April 12.

Rosenior explained that the decision was necessary to uphold discipline and protect the team’s internal culture.

Speaking on the issue, the Chelsea boss expressed disappointment but stopped short of criticizing the player personally. He acknowledged Fernández’s qualities and commitment but stressed that maintaining standards within the squad remains a priority.

Rosenior also revealed that the decision was not made unilaterally, noting that the club’s ownership, players, and leadership were all aligned in enforcing the sanction. Despite the disciplinary action, he made it clear that the situation is not beyond repair, emphasizing that the door remains open for Fernández’s return.

The controversy stems from comments made by Fernández after Chelsea’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League, where he hinted at uncertainty over his long-term future at Stamford Bridge. He mentioned a desire to live in Spain and drew comparisons between Madrid and Buenos Aires, though he later clarified that there had been no discussions with Real Madrid and reaffirmed his focus on Chelsea.

Rosenior admitted the timing of the comments was far from ideal, especially given the club’s recent struggles. Chelsea endured a difficult run between March 11 and 21, losing four consecutive matches, including a heavy aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in European competition.

The situation is not isolated within the squad. Defender Marc Cucurella also sparked speculation after hinting at a possible return to Spain, although he later clarified his commitment to Chelsea. Rosenior confirmed he had addressed the matter directly with the player and is satisfied with his response.

Despite recent setbacks, Chelsea remain competitive domestically and currently sit sixth in the Premier League, still pushing for a top-four finish.

They will next face Port Vale at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup quarter-finals as they aim to keep their hopes of silverware alive.

What you should know

Enzo Fernández’s suspension highlights Chelsea’s effort to enforce discipline during a challenging period.

Manager Liam Rosenior emphasized team culture and unity over individual expression, even for key players. The incident follows a poor run of results and growing speculation about player futures. While Fernández’s comments triggered the sanction, the club has left room for reconciliation.

Chelsea remain focused on domestic success, balancing internal stability with their push for a top-four finish and FA Cup progress.
