Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has formally resigned from his position as the Deputy Governor of Kano State.

The development was confirmed on Friday evening by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Shuaibu.

His resignation comes about three weeks after the Kano State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against him.

A total of 38 members of the Assembly had endorsed a motion to begin the impeachment process.

The action followed allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violation of public trust.

The impeachment notice was read during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore, after it was presented by the Majority Leader, Lawan Husseini Dala.

According to the lawmakers, the former deputy governor allegedly received kickbacks of ₦1.5 million monthly from each of the 44 local government councils in the state between June 2023 and January 2024.

They said the payments amounted to ₦66 million per month and a total of ₦462 million within the seven-month period.

The Assembly further alleged that between February and July 2024, Gwarzo received additional cash returns of ₦3.255 million monthly from each local government council under the guise of executing special assignments.

The lawmakers claimed that the total amount allegedly received during that period rose to ₦726 million.

Gwarzo’s political challenges reportedly began after he declined to defect, along with the Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
