An emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party is currently underway in Abuja, bringing together key factions within the party amid ongoing internal tensions.
The high-level gathering, taking place at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge, is being coordinated by the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee alongside the Board of Trustees chaired by Adolphus Wabara.
This marks the third such meeting within the week, underscoring the urgency of resolving disputes that have threatened the party’s unity.
At the centre of discussions is the controversy surrounding the planned national convention proposed by the Abdulrahman Mohamed-led caretaker committee. The committee, reportedly backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has maintained that the convention scheduled for March 29 and 30 must proceed as planned, even as reconciliation talks continue.
During a similar meeting earlier in the week, Tanimu Turaki indicated that his faction remains open to reconciliation, noting that ongoing negotiations have shown encouraging progress toward resolving the crisis.

The caretaker committee has also expressed willingness to reconcile but outlined conditions, chief among them being the insistence that the scheduled convention must hold without delay.
Among prominent figures present at the ongoing NEC meeting are Turaki, Wabara, former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, and former Minister Jerry Gana.
In his opening remarks, Turaki informed attendees that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, had sent his apologies for being unable to attend the meeting. He also assured members that the Bauchi State Governor is expected to join the session.
Turaki further disclosed that members would receive updates on reconciliation efforts during a closed-door session. He expressed optimism about the party’s future, stressing that efforts are being intensified to ensure the PDP remains a strong contender and is fully prepared to participate in the 2027 general elections.
More details are expected as deliberations continue behind closed doors.
What you should know
The ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party revolves around leadership disputes and disagreements over the legitimacy and timing of its national convention.
Two major factions, one led by Tanimu Turaki and another by Abdulrahman Mohamed with backing from Nyesom Wike, are struggling for control. While both sides claim to support reconciliation, key conditions remain unresolved.
The outcome of these talks is critical, as it will determine the party’s unity, structure, and readiness to effectively participate in the 2027 general elections.
