President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector-General of Police following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

Egbetokun stepped down from the top position in the Nigeria Police Force, citing pressing family considerations. He was appointed in June 2023 and was serving a four-year tenure scheduled to end in June 2027 in line with the amended Police Act.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu acknowledged receipt of Egbetokun’s resignation letter and expressed appreciation for his service to the nation.

Until his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon, Lagos.

In line with policing tradition in Nigeria, senior officers often retire when a junior colleague is appointed Inspector-General of Police. Though not legally mandatory, the practice reflects the Force’s adherence to hierarchy and seniority.

With Disu’s appointment, several Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) may be affected.

Frank Mba began his policing career as an Inspector and rose steadily through the ranks. He has served multiple times as National Spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force and was decorated as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in March 2023. He also received the UN Medal for his service with the Nigeria Police Contingent to the United Nations Mission in Liberia between 2006 and 2007.

Mohammed Gumel currently serves as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Department at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. He is known for his work in community policing and was recognised as Community Policing Advocate of the Year in 2024.

Ademola Hamzat is the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Logistics and Supply. Before his elevation, he served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of Zone 16, Yenagoa, and as Commissioner of Police for Oyo State.

Yahaya Abubakar heads the Department of Finance and Administration at the Force Headquarters. He oversees financial management, budgeting, human resources and administrative processes within the Force.

Basil Idegwu leads the Department of Research and Planning, where he is responsible for strategic planning and policy formulation aimed at enhancing operational efficiency. He holds a Ph.D. in Peace and Security Studies.

Bzigu Kwazhi serves as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Operations. He coordinates operational activities, joint security operations and national crime prevention strategies.

Idris Abubakar, appointed into the Force as a cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1992, holds academic qualifications up to a PhD in Psychology and has served in various senior capacities.

Adebowale William heads the Department of Information and Communication Technology at the Force Headquarters, overseeing the Force’s technological infrastructure and digital systems to support modern policing.
