Chimamanda Adichie, the renowned Nigerian author, has shared the joyful news that she welcomed twin boys in 2024, expanding her family, which also includes her nine-year-old daughter.
In an exclusive interview with The Guardian, Adichie spoke candidly about the intense public curiosity surrounding her personal life, including her efforts to balance the demands of motherhood with her writing career. “I want to protect my children,” Adichie stated, emphasizing her desire to keep her children’s lives out of the spotlight. “I’m OK with having them mentioned, but I don’t want the piece to become about them.”
Adichie, 47, has always been private about her personal affairs, including her marriage to physician Ivara Esege in 2009. She explained that Nigerians often have a strong interest in the private lives of public figures, a trend that has made her resistant to discussing her own. “Nigerians are… they want to know about your personal life. Because of that, I am resistant. I very rarely talk about it,” she explained.
After a decade-long hiatus from fiction, Adichie is preparing to release Dream Count, a novel that delves into themes of immigration, motherhood, and marriage. She confessed that motherhood had led to a period of creative block. “I had a number of years in which I was almost existentially frightened that I wouldn’t write again. It was unbearable,” she recalled.
Her breakthrough came while writing Notes on Grief, a reflection on the loss of her father in 2020. Looking back on her new book, Adichie noted, “My God, it’s about my mother. It wasn’t intentional. I’m happy that it’s not a sad book. She wouldn’t want a sad book dedicated to her.”
