Rap legend Snoop Dogg found himself at the center of controversy this week after making critical remarks about LGBTQ representation in children’s films, specifically targeting Disney’s “Lightyear,” before issuing a public apology following widespread criticism from the LGBTQ community and activists.
The 53-year-old rapper, whose real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., initially expressed confusion about explaining same-sex relationships to his grandson during a podcast appearance. Snoop claimed that “they’re putting it everywhere” when referring to LGBTQ representation in children’s movies, particularly after watching “Lightyear” with his grandson.
The 2022 Pixar film features a same-sex couple that raises a child together, and at one point, they share a kiss—a scene that led to the film being banned in several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.
Snoop’s comments drew sharp criticism from prominent LGBTQ advocates, including transgender reality star TS Madison, who appeared on TMZ Live to respond to the rapper’s remarks. Madison called Snoop’s comments “rooted in homophobia” and urged him to “educate your grandkids” rather than avoiding difficult conversations.
Facing mounting pressure and calls for him to be dropped from an upcoming performance, Snoop Dogg took to social media to clarify his position and apologize. In his response to an Instagram clip featuring Madison’s criticism, the rapper admitted he was unprepared for his grandson’s questions about the film’s same-sex couple.
“I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons,” Snoop wrote in his apology. “All my gay friends [know] what’s up; they’ve been calling me with love. My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6-year-old.”
The controversy highlights ongoing tensions around LGBTQ representation in children’s entertainment, with the “Lightyear” kiss scene having previously sparked debate within Pixar itself. The moment had sparked widespread controversy internally at Pixar after the studio considered cutting the same-sex kiss, according to reports about employee pushback against Disney executives.
“Beautiful love like this exists,” Lightyear screenwriter Lauren Gunderson said in response to the controversy. “It’s not fiction.”
The incident represents a notable moment for Snoop Dogg, who has generally maintained a more progressive public image in recent years, and underscores the ongoing cultural debates surrounding age-appropriate content and representation in family entertainment.
