Nigerian Grammy winner Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, has achieved another groundbreaking milestone in her meteoric rise to global stardom.

The 29-year-old singer-songwriter recently received Spotify’s coveted Billion plaque, recognizing that her collaborative track “Wait For U” with Future and Drake has surpassed one billion streams on the platform.

This achievement places Tems in exclusive company within the Afrobeats genre, joining fellow Nigerian artists Wizkid and Rema, alongside South African singer Tyla, as the only Afrobeats artists to receive Spotify’s prestigious billion streams recognition.

However, Tems holds a particularly significant distinction as the first African female artist to reach this streaming milestone, marking a historic moment for representation in the global music industry.

“Wait For U,” released as part of Future’s 2022 album “I Never Liked You,” has proven to be more than just a commercial success—it’s been a career-defining moment for Tems. The track notably samples Tems’ composition “Higher” from her 2020 EP “For Broken Ears,” showcasing how the artist’s earlier work provided the foundation for this massive hit.

The song’s impact extends far beyond streaming numbers. In 2023, “Wait For U” earned Tems her first Grammy Award in the Best Melodic Rap category, cementing her status as a force in contemporary music. The track also made history in 2022 when it debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making Tems the first African artist to achieve this feat on the prestigious chart.

This latest accolade underscores the continued global expansion of Afrobeats, a genre that has evolved from its Nigerian roots to become a dominant force in international music. Tems’ success, alongside artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido, has helped establish a new generation of African artists who are not just breaking into Western markets but actively shaping them.

The Spotify Billion plaque represents more than just numerical achievement—it’s recognition of cultural impact and artistic excellence. For Tems, whose career began with intimate performances in Lagos before skyrocketing to Grammy stages and Billboard charts, this milestone reflects the growing appreciation for Afrobeats’ unique sound and the powerful voices emerging from the continent.

As streaming continues to democratize music discovery and consumption globally, achievements like Tems’ billion-stream milestone signal a broader shift in the music industry’s landscape, where artists from previously underrepresented regions are finding unprecedented success on the world’s biggest platforms.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Tems has made history as the first African female artist to receive Spotify’s Billion plaque for “Wait For U” with Future and Drake, joining only three other Afrobeats artists to achieve this milestone.

Beyond the streaming numbers, this represents a pivotal moment for African music’s global impact—the same track that made her the first African artist to debut at #1 on Billboard Hot 100 and earned her a Grammy Award. Tems’ success signals the undeniable rise of Afrobeats as a dominant force in international music, proving that African artists are not just participating in global music markets but actively leading them.
