A total of 170 foreign nationals have submitted applications seeking Nigerian citizenship, according to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The minister revealed this in a statement shared on his X handle after chairing a meeting of the Citizenship Advisory Committee held in Abuja.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo explained that the Citizenship Advisory Committee has been officially constituted to evaluate and recommend applications for citizenship approval to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The committee, he noted, consists of senior representatives from key government agencies, including the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

NIGERIAN VISA

Reaffirming the federal government’s dedication to maintaining fairness, transparency, and credibility in the process, the minister stressed that acquiring Nigerian citizenship is a privilege rather than a right. He described Nigeria as “the largest black nation on earth,” noting that such a status places a unique responsibility on the government to ensure only deserving individuals are granted citizenship.

“Our promise stands. Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we will continue to do everything possible to make our beloved country a prosperous nation and a destination of interest for all,” Tunji-Ojo said.

FG Declares Public Holidays

He further emphasised that the committee considers the review process a test of its credibility and will act in line with the trust placed in it by Nigerians.

“Citizenship of the biggest black nation on earth is a valuable asset that requires careful consideration. We assure Nigerians that we will prioritise integrity and proven character above all else,” he added.
