The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a fresh upward review of the cost of obtaining the Nigerian Standard Passport, with the new rates set to take effect from September 1, 2025.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, the adjustment applies only to passport applications made within Nigeria.

“The review, which only affect Passport Application fees made in Nigeria, now set a new fee thresholds for 32-page with 5-year validity at N100,000 and 64-page with 10-year validity at N200,000,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the NIS clarified that fees for Nigerians applying from abroad remain unchanged at $150 for the 32-page, five-year passport and $230 for the 64-page, 10-year passport.

The Service explained that the new rates were introduced to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport while ensuring accessibility for citizens.

This is the second increase in just over a year. In August 2024, the Federal Government approved an upward adjustment, effective September 1, 2024, which raised the cost of the 32-page, five-year passport from N35,000 to N50,000 and the 64-page, 10-year passport from N70,000 to N100,000.

At the time, the NIS stated that the increment was necessary to sustain the quality of the document and improve service delivery.

What you should know

The Nigerian passport is one of the most sought-after official documents in the country. With the latest review, the 32-page, five-year booklet has nearly tripled in price within two years, signaling the government’s emphasis on sustaining production standards amid rising operational costs.
