Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced a proposal for a fresh round of peace negotiations with Russia, signaling Kyiv’s desire to revive diplomatic efforts that have stalled since early June.
In his Saturday evening address, Zelensky revealed that Security Council Secretary Rustem Umerov had reached out to Moscow to suggest a meeting for next week. “The momentum of the negotiations must be stepped up,” Zelensky stressed, underscoring the urgency of finding a path to peace.
Despite two previous negotiation rounds in Istanbul yielding little beyond prisoner swaps and agreements on returning fallen soldiers’ remains, Zelensky remains open to direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “A meeting at the leadership level is needed to truly ensure peace—lasting peace,” he stated.
The last round of talks collapsed after Russia presented a series of hardline conditions, including demands for Ukraine to relinquish more territory and reject all forms of Western military assistance. Kyiv deemed those demands “unacceptable” and questioned the credibility of any future negotiations under such rigid terms.
The Kremlin has recently expressed readiness to return to the table, particularly after US President Donald Trump issued a 50-day deadline for Moscow to reach a peace agreement or face new sanctions. Trump also committed to delivering additional military aid to Ukraine, backed by NATO allies, in response to the continued bombardment of Ukrainian cities.
Meanwhile, Russia’s aerial assaults on Ukraine show no sign of slowing. On Saturday alone, three civilians were reportedly killed in fresh strikes, further complicating hopes for de-escalation.
