Tottenham Hotspur have officially completed the signing of Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig, delivering a significant boost to new manager Thomas Frank as he looks to shape his squad for the Premier League season.

Throughout the summer transfer window, Spurs had been actively searching for an attacking midfielder to strengthen their squad. Previous attempts to sign high-profile players fell short, with Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White proving out of reach and a move for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze collapsing after the England international chose to join Arsenal, Tottenham’s long-standing north London rivals.

This makes the arrival of 22-year-old Simons all the more crucial. His signing ensures Spurs remain competitive at the top of the table, where they currently share an unbeaten start to the season with Arsenal and reigning champions Liverpool, both of whom have also won their first two games.

Tottenham confirmed that the Netherlands international has penned a “long-term contract,” although the agreement is subject to international clearance and a work permit. While Spurs declined to disclose the exact transfer fee, British media outlets have reported that the deal is worth an initial £51.8 million ($69.9 million), with potential add-ons included.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Simons expressed his delight at joining Spurs. “I’m really happy and can’t wait to get going,” he said. “I’ve been dreaming of this for a long time. It’s a great club and when I met the head coach (Frank) I knew straight away that this was the right place for me. I will bring flair to the team but also hard work and discipline. I want to do everything I can to win, for the team and also for the fans.”

Manager Thomas Frank, who only recently took charge at Tottenham, praised Simons’ versatility and creativity. “Xavi has proven his ability to get goals and assists, both from the number 10 position and left-wing,” Frank said. “He also has a great eye for his team-mates in terms of unlocking defences, and I know he will come in and be part of a good team that is already working hard together.”

Simons’ arrival comes at a critical moment for Spurs, who have been hit with injury setbacks. James Maddison, a key figure in the midfield, suffered a severe knee injury during pre-season and is expected to miss most of the campaign. In addition, Dejan Kulusevski, who has also filled in as an attacking midfielder, is sidelined with a knee problem.

The Dutchman’s career has already taken him through some of Europe’s most prestigious academies and clubs. A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, the same school that produced Lionel Messi, Simons made the switch to Paris Saint-Germain in 2019. His breakthrough came while on loan at PSV Eindhoven during the 2022/23 season, where he netted 22 goals and became one of the most exciting young talents in Europe.

Following his successful spell in the Netherlands, Simons joined RB Leipzig, where he continued his development and contributed 22 goals across 78 appearances over two seasons. His performances convinced Leipzig to secure his services permanently earlier this year, before Tottenham swooped in with an offer.

Spurs fans will get their first chance to see their new signing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before Saturday’s home match against Bournemouth. Simons will wear the number seven shirt, previously held by club legend and former captain Son Heung-min.

What you should know

Xavi Simons, a 22-year-old Dutch midfielder, has joined Tottenham Hotspur from RB Leipzig in a deal reported to be worth over £50 million.

A product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, Simons has previously played for Paris Saint-Germain, PSV Eindhoven, and Leipzig. He arrives at Spurs to fill the creative void left by injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.

He will wear the iconic number seven shirt and is seen as a key figure in Thomas Frank’s plans to establish Tottenham among the Premier League’s top contenders.
