President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday called on the leadership of the 10th Senate to amend the Constitution to provide for the establishment of state police.

The appeal was made during an interfaith breakfast with senators at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, according to a statement issued by the Presidential Spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.

Tinubu said the creation of state police had become urgent in light of evolving security challenges across the country, including terrorism, banditry, and insurgency.

“We are facing terrorism, banditry and insurgency. But we will never fail to make the right response.

“What I will ask for tonight is for you to start thinking about how best to amend the Constitution to incorporate State Police,” the president said.

He argued that decentralised policing would enhance grassroots security, enable faster response to threats within states, and help secure forests from criminal elements.

Executive–Legislative Cooperation

Tinubu also commended the harmonious working relationship between the executive and the National Assembly.

“It is a good thing that we are working in harmony, looking forward to a country that protects all,” he said.

The president thanked the Senate for backing key economic reforms undertaken by his administration, noting that such measures would not have been possible without legislative collaboration.

“Without your collaboration, those reforms would not be possible. We are reformists together,” he stated.

Tinubu further said the removal of the fuel subsidy had curtailed large-scale corruption and foreign exchange arbitrage, adding that the country was experiencing improved economic stability.

“What we are enjoying is a stable economy, and prosperity is beckoning us. We need to work hard,” he added.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, commended Tinubu for hosting the interfaith breakfast and expressed support for the administration’s reform agenda.

Akpabio noted that recent reforms had boosted revenue allocations to sub-national governments, enabling increased infrastructure development.

He also offered prayers for the president and for peace and prosperity across the country.
