President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the bravery and commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces, acknowledging their unwavering sacrifices in defending the country.
Speaking at the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) Conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, Tinubu emphasized the critical role of the military in preserving national unity and peace.
The President urged citizens to extend encouragement and moral support to the troops who daily risk their lives for the stability of the nation.
“Yes, we are challenged by terrorism, banditry, and others. We recognise that. Are we doing something about it? Are we inspiring the armed forces? Are we encouraging them to fight? They put their lives on the line to defend the sovereignty of this country. It is our responsibility,” Tinubu stated.
Rising Insecurity and International Reactions
The President’s remarks came at a time when Nigerians continue to express growing concerns about insecurity across various regions. Calls have intensified for the Federal Government to act decisively in curbing terrorism, banditry, and communal violence.
Earlier this month, United States President Donald Trump described the wave of violence in Nigeria as a “mass slaughter,” warning that Christianity faces an existential threat in the country. He added that the United States “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening.”
In response, the Nigerian government urged the U.S. President to approach the issue with understanding, insisting that the nation is recording progress in its security operations. The Federal Government highlighted notable achievements in the North-East, where terrorist networks have suffered major setbacks.
Last Thursday, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation and intensifying the fight against terrorism and organized crime. “The task ahead is immense. But we are resolved to move forward with unity and purpose, to defeat terrorism and build a prosperous, inclusive, and resilient Nigeria,” he said.
Evidence of Progress in Counter-Terrorism
The Presidency also announced that Nigeria has witnessed an 81 percent decrease in terror-related deaths since 2015, attributing the progress to improved intelligence-sharing and coordination among security agencies.
According to a statement on its official X account, the Presidency disclosed that over 13,000 terrorists have been neutralized within the past year, while 124,000 fighters and their dependents have surrendered to the authorities.
Additionally, the government reported that more than 2.1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned home, with reconstruction efforts underway in several previously ravaged communities.
“Since 2023, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through enhanced inter-agency cooperation, has vigorously pursued, arrested, eliminated, or successfully convicted terrorists and insurgents, especially those responsible for some of the most heinous attacks on Nigerian territory,” the statement read.
It further noted that “since 2024, over 124 terrorists and insurgents have been successfully convicted, while others, including members of the Ansaru leadership and those responsible for the Owo Church bombing in 2022, as well as the Yelwata (Benue) reprisal and counter-reprisal attacks, are undergoing trial in various courts.”
