Super Eagles Resume Training After Boycott Over Unpaid Allowances Ahead of Clash with Gabon

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have resumed training after boycotting their earlier session over unpaid allowances owed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The development comes just ahead of their crucial semi-final clash against Gabon in the 2026 African World Cup playoffs scheduled for Thursday.

On Tuesday evening, both players and officials of the national team refused to attend training in protest of unpaid entitlements. According to reports, the players are still awaiting payment of their allowances for qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as well as bonuses tied to the ongoing World Cup playoff campaign.

Although specific details of the discussions held between the team and football authorities remain undisclosed, sources suggest that an understanding was eventually reached late Tuesday night, leading to the team’s decision to return to training.

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong confirmed that the matter had been resolved and assured supporters of the team’s renewed commitment.

He wrote, “Issue RESOLVED. We are together and as before focussed on the games ahead!”

This reassurance has brought relief to millions of Nigerian fans who had feared the payment dispute might disrupt preparations ahead of the vital encounter.

The Super Eagles are set to face Gabon today in one of the semi-final fixtures of the 2026 World Cup playoffs. A victory would see them advance to the final round, where they will meet either Congo DR or Cameroon for a chance to secure Africa’s sole intercontinental playoff slot.

Meanwhile, analysts have urged the NFF to prioritize prompt payment of players’ entitlements to maintain morale and focus in upcoming fixtures. The federation has yet to issue an official statement on the resolution or provide clarity on when the pending allowances will be fully settled.
