Three members of the Adamawa State House of Assembly have resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party.
The lawmakers are Abubakar Abdullahi, former Speaker of the House and representative of Girei Constituency; Haruna Jilantikiri of Gulak Constituency; and Kifas Calvin of Tungo Constituency.
Among them, only Abdullahi has disclosed his next political step, confirming that he is joining the All Progressives Congress. The remaining two lawmakers have yet to announce the political parties they intend to align with.
Their resignation comes at a time when the All Progressives Congress is reportedly working to strengthen its political dominance in 30 of Nigeria’s 36 states, amid indications that Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, may also defect to the ruling party.
If the governor’s move is confirmed, it would represent one of the most significant territorial expansions by a political party since Nigeria returned to democratic governance in 1999.
Fintiri’s potential defection is viewed as politically sensitive, given that Adamawa is the home state of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a key figure in the 2027 presidential contest.
It is understood that any alignment of the governor with the APC could weaken Atiku’s political stronghold ahead of the next general election.
The development follows a series of political realignments across the country, including reports of the imminent formal reception of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, into the APC at a ceremony expected to hold on Monday.
