The Ekiti State Government has declared Friday, June 19, 2026, a work-free day for all public servants across the state to enable them travel to their various voting centres ahead of the governorship election scheduled for Saturday, June 20.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Head of Service, Janet Ajibola.

According to the statement, Governor Biodun Oyebanji approved the work-free day to allow public workers adequate time to prepare for and participate in the election process.

Ajibola said the directive applies to commissioners, special advisers, the Secretary to the State Government, permanent secretaries, the Clerk of the House of Assembly, heads of tertiary institutions, the Registrar of the High Court of Justice, executive secretaries, general managers and heads of government departments and agencies.

However, the government noted that essential service providers would not be affected by the directive.

She explained that hospitals and health centres, fire service departments and other critical service providers are exempted and are expected to continue operations throughout the election period to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.

The Permanent Secretary urged heads of the affected institutions to make necessary arrangements to maintain essential services while the election takes place.

She also directed chief executive officers and accounting officers of government parastatals and agencies to ensure full compliance with the directive and circulate the information widely among staff.

The Ekiti governorship election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, June 20, with voters expected to elect a new governor for the state.
