As political realignments continue across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, seven serving governors have so far resisted pressure to join the ruling All Progressives Congress.
While defections have become frequent and largely quiet, these governors have chosen to remain outside the party despite its growing control at the state level.
The APC now controls about 29 states following a wave of defections since the start of the year, including the recent one by the Kano State governor.
The growing dominance of the ruling party has placed opposition governors under intense political and institutional pressure, with many facing isolation and uncertainty about their political future.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed remains one of the strongest voices outside the APC.
As chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, he has stayed with the PDP despite increased federal scrutiny of his administration, including legal actions involving key state officials.
He continues to position himself as a rallying point for opposition governors.
In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has also refused to defect.
His decision is largely tied to strong local support built through infrastructure development, education reforms and healthcare projects.
His electoral strength within the state reduces the appeal of switching parties.
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has remained with the PDP after ending APC dominance in the state during the 2023 elections.
His victory was widely seen as a rejection of long-standing political structures, and a move to the ruling party could weaken the trust placed in him by voters.
Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has continued his stay in the PDP, focusing on maintaining political balance in the state.
His administration has prioritized agriculture and education, as his aides described his position as a careful effort to avoid instability that could follow sudden political shifts.
In Abia State, Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party has relied on governance to strengthen his standing.
Reforms that improved salary payments and encouraged investment have helped him gain support beyond party lines, reducing pressure to align with the APC.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has also stayed outside the ruling party.
Although he resigned from the PDP in late 2025 due to internal disagreements, he has not joined the APC.
He continues to depend on grassroots support and visible projects to maintain control of the state.
Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has drawn a clear line between cooperation and defection.
While supporting some federal economic policies, he has remained loyal to the All Progressives Grand Alliance, maintaining that the party reflects regional political identity rather than opposition to the centre.
With defections becoming increasingly common, the stance of these seven governors keeps a small opposition presence alive at the state level as the 2027 elections approach.
