The Nigerian Senate has called for the urgent establishment of a military base in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, following a recent surge in Boko Haram attacks that have claimed lives and displaced thousands across the North East.

The resolution was adopted during Wednesday’s plenary as lawmakers deliberated on a motion of urgent national importance. The motion, sponsored by Senator Iya Abbas, highlighted the deteriorating security situation in Hong and Gombi LGAs, noting that five coordinated attacks have occurred in Hong alone since February 2025.

While commending the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their ongoing efforts, senators stressed the need for reinforced security in the region through a permanent military presence in Hong. They argued that such a base would significantly bolster the defense of vulnerable communities and help contain further insurgent advances.

The debate, however, took a constitutional turn when opposition Senator Seriake Dickson raised objections, warning that directing the establishment of a military base may exceed the Senate’s constitutional powers. He reminded the chamber that such decisions fall squarely within the jurisdiction of the executive, led by the President.

Countering this view, Senator Wasiu Eshilokun insisted the Senate was operating within its legal bounds. Referring to Section 217(2)(c) of the Nigerian Constitution, Eshilokun clarified that while military deployment remains an executive function, it is also subject to legislative oversight and input.

“To say the National Assembly has no power would be a misinterpretation,” he stated. “We have not crossed the line.”

The resolution reflects growing legislative concern over the security situation in the North East, particularly in areas frequently targeted by Boko Haram. While the call for a military base is non-binding, it signals strong political pressure on the executive to take decisive action in the affected regions.
