The Senate has passed constitutional amendment bills aimed at creating state police across Nigeria.

The proposed amendments seek to provide a legal framework for state-controlled police forces to operate alongside the existing federal police system.

The move is intended to strengthen security, improve intelligence gathering and ensure quicker responses to local security threats.

The Senate’s approval marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to address rising insecurity in different parts of the country, including banditry, kidnapping, insurgency and communal clashes.

However, the constitutional amendments have not yet become law.

For the proposals to take effect, they must receive approval from at least two-thirds of the State Houses of Assembly across the country before being sent to the President for assent.

More details are expected to emerge.
